Mathematics

At Burnley High school the Mathematics department are passionate about creating curious, resilient learners who will gain a firm understanding of all aspects of Mathematics to take onto their future chosen careers. As mathematicians ourselves, we are passionate about our subject and our curriculum is built to foster a love for Maths both in and out of the classroom.

Our curriculum is designed on the National Curriculum and offers a blend of Algebra, Number, Ratio and Proportion, Statistics and Geometry. The sequencing of our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure students have core mathematical knowledge embedded into their long term memory.  We do this by providing students systematic opportunities to revisit prior learning through the interleaving of topics and developing an automatic response of key mathematical skills through regular and purposeful practise.

We also aim to ensure our students gain a love and appreciation for all the Mathematics around them and will fully enjoy Maths. We have high expectations of all our young Mathematicians, students are encouraged and take risks and develop the skills to problem solve in a range of contexts.  Making mistakes along the way is part of our journey and learning from mistakes is how we become resolute Mathematicians who are able to reason and think logically.

Staff Quotes:

“I love the beauty of Maths, it is black and white with the answer being right or wrong but it is so colourful with the variety of methods to get to that answer. I love the debate it causes and the delight when students understand.  The topics are so varied and different from each other it never gets boring. I love introducing algebra to students for the first time and seeing them grasp how to use letters in calculations. No one ever thinks Maths is easy – but no one is bad at Maths.” Assistant Head Teacher, Mrs. C. Cragg.

I love BHS because it really does feel like a family. All staff and students know each other, are extremely supportive of one another and show amazing levels of respect throughout the school. There really isn’t another school like it!”
