At Burnley High School, provision for Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance is an essential part of our ethos and as such, we have developed a tailored and individualised programme that promotes the resilience of our students as well as the skills needed to navigate the 21st century employment market.

We believe that good CEIAG is crucial in order for students at Burnley High School to become successful in their chosen path when they leave us at the end of year 11. We give students the tools they need in order to decide for themselves what they want.

Our programme includes personal development sessions, dedicated career days, visits from employers and colleges, visits to workplaces, colleges and universities and regularly updated careers information and advice within school and here on the website.

Gatsby Benchmarks

As a school we are committed to achieving the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks, a framework of 8 guidelines that define the best careers provision in schools and colleges. Burnley High School is committed and actively working alongside the Careers and Enterprise Company to ensure the benchmarks are in place to guarantee our careers strategy is built around what is best for our learners.

Measure and Assess the Impact of the Careers Programme

It is hard to evaluate the success of any careers programme however we use these methods:

  • Published data:The Department for Education publishes a range of data on pupil destinations at 16 and 18 and we compare our school with the local area and all schools in England.
  • Evaluating activities:We try to evaluate the success of each activity by asking our students for feedback on the impact of the activity. In some cases we try and see what the longer term, rather than just the immediate, impact is as well as any future development we can put in place in order to improve the activities.
  • Feedback:We encourage students, parents, carers, employers, staff and governors to provide feedback about careers at Burnley High School. We do this through surveys, questionnaires and focus groups. Start

 

Start is a free, online careers platform designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential. It combines the most comprehensive source of information with a personalised experience and career planning tools, helping our students to make more informed decisions about their future study and career options, as well as developing their employability.

Start includes:

  • A student profile: students build their profile and access personalised study and career information.
  • Modules: activities to guide students through the information on Start at the right time.
  • Up to date information: engaging content on what to study, where to learn and the world of work.
  • Locker: an online record of achievement to evidence skills for future applications and CVs.
  • Employability action plan: Students can set goals and stay in control of their career planning.

iDEA

iDEA is a programme that helps you develop digital, enterprise and employability skills. Through a series of online challenges and events, you can win career and life enhancing badges, unlock new opportunities and, ultimately, gain industry recognised awards that help you stand out from the crowd. iDEA is about lifelong learning, for anyone who wants to develop their skills. Our learners include school pupils, apprentices, business leaders, pensioners, students and community groups.

When you’ve taken enough badges in each of the categories, you will be able to earn an Award – a recognised symbol of your hard work, determination and skill. At beginner level, you can achieve the Bronze Award; and when you have mastered the basics, you can work towards the Silver Award, which is set at intermediate level. iDEA aspires to be the digital and enterprise equivalent of The Duke of Edinburgh Award.

SEND careers information

Pupils with SEND will receive support in their choices for education and employment through our CEIAG strategy ensuring they are well informed and are able to achieve their aspirations.
